Classes at the Barbara A. Wood Academy of Art will help develop and strengthen creative skills, build self-esteem, develop a sense of self-importance and individuality, and, stimulate imagination in children and adults through the arts.

We will encourage students to use art as a means of self expression, problem solving and to have fun. As professional art teachers we believe in art for art's sake, but we also believe that art, design and creativity all have a very important role in everyone’s life.

By encouraging a child's creativity, you open the door for endless opportunities for that child's imagination. A thriving imagination not only creates a confident and productive individual, but it also builds self-esteem, which is an important tool that will be used for the rest of that child's life. This holds true for all ages. When any person creates a work of art, they are not just drawing a picture, they are also creating aspects of
self-importance, individuality and engaging in self-expression.

There is a strong emphasis on the process and journey of the creative experience rather than outcome.
Our teachers recognise that children work at different paces and with a variety of learning styles and will always work with the students to help them understand these differences in themselves and others.

It is our vision to nurture and explore the artist within all the students. While doing so,
students will
:

  • Develop basic concepts of design and elements of art
  • Be enhanced intellectually by the history and style of the visual arts
  • Learn to analyze in supportive and respectful manner the visual art works of others
  • Recognize visual arts as a continually evolving entity that incorporates many
    different media
  • Create pieces of art work that portray emotions and personality
  • Learn the skills to apply the arts to all areas of their academic, personal & professional lives
  • Develop a growing appreciation of the artist, works of art and development of the arts in
    the community
